Catfish weighing 108 and 103 pounds highlight Bass Pro Shop's Big Cat Quest Championship in Memphis.

Memphis, TN - As anglers disappeared into the predawn darkness to fish Bass Pro Shop's Big Cat Quest Championship on Nov. 3, expectations were high. The 200-plus fishermen had come to Memphis, Tenn. knowing the Mississippi River's astounding potential for producing monster catfish. Yet no one in their wildest dreams anticipated the historic events that were about to transpire.

This is a story from a little different angle. I am a Black Bass Guide and Tournament fisherman. I'll be honest and say if I catch a Big Catfish, I enjoy the tussle. I just don't look for them. I have friends who Catfish and even I've been known to drift a shad or two with them at times for Kitty Kats below Denison Dam.

Long-distance anglers wrap up Big Cat Quest

By the time this weekend is done, Glenn Grogan and Walter Hays will have spent far more time driving than they have fishing. But in that limited amount of fishing time, they accomplished much.

Instead of traveling to Memphis and fishing foreign waters during Saturday's Bass Pro Shops Big Cat Quest tournament, the Arlington, Ky., natives chose to stay home and fish familiar waters in Kentucky.

What is so special about June 16, 2007? Why should you be there? Because you could walk away a winner! Hopewell City Marina Site of Bass Pro Shop Big Cat Quest

April 14th at the Hopewell City Marina was packed filled with activities for the Big Cat Quest and The Jack Randolph River Fest. As you came into the city from the Appomattox bridge you could see that this was a happening event with hundreds of people on site! Full of vendors, games, fishing boats, and activity galore!!!

World Championship Of Catfish Held On Tennessee River

The World Championship of Catfishing/Catfish Derby is possibly the oldest fishing tournament of any kind in the country. Catfish anglers have been competing for cash and prizes since the ’30 on the Tennessee River and from the great time I had fishing the tournament recently, I can easily see why the event is so popular.

Fisherman's fantasy: Winning the Catfish Derby

Since Jan. 19, participants have been headed to the lakes and rivers of the state, hoping to catch the big one in a six-week-long weighing competition. The derby leads up to the ultimate event, the catfish championship tournament at Pickwick Landing State Park.

The event was moved from July to March this year.

Despite the colder weather, it has not kept people from striving for the prize.

2007 National Catfish Derby

The National Catfish Derby officially began January 19 with a six-week fishing rodeo in Savannah and ending March 3 with the World Championship of Catfishing at Pickwick Landing State Park.

The weather for the Catfish Derby has always been a challenge, but usually on the other end of the thermometer. Last year’s tournament saw temperatures in the mid to upper 90s. But the change of date for 2007 will also bring cooler temperatures and possibly bigger catfish.

The Daytona 500 of Catfishing, the National Catfish Derby is set for March 03, 2007!!!

What is increasing in popularity, big money, fun and prestige by leaps and bounds? Catfishing. Especially popular in the South, the sport is beginning to accelerate across the country and is becoming "the' monster fish to catch. It is growing in tournament trail venues and the Mid-South is fortuanent enough to have the one event where you can find all the aspects of Catfishing in one great tournament, The National Catfish Derby, The World Championship of Catfishing offered and owned by Ken Freeman of Ken Freeman Outdoor Promotions. This tournament is one of the oldest fishing tournaments in the United States, and is considered to be the granddaddy of all Catfishing tournaments.

"The Tank" Makes Debut Appearance at Wal-Mart in Paris

What is 53 feet long, holds 6,000 plus gallons of water and is currently the world's largest of its type? It's the Ken Freeman Outdoor Promotions mobile fish tank, sponsored by Bass Pro Shops and Tracker Boats. Curious shoppers at Wal-Mart in Paris were amazed to see this huge tank filled with large live bass and brim in the parking lot on Saturday, March 18.
