Bass Pro Shop's Big Cat Quest Comes to Cape
Cape Girardeau was the site for success as the Bass Pro Shop's Big Cat Quest presented by American Shelter Technologies and Ken Freeman Outdoor Promotions journeyed into town on August 12th, 2006. There were challenges to be met and overcome as Mother Nature is not always one to cooperate. Temps were in the low 90's. It was sunny and winds were calm, but the drought across the Heartland, had the Mississippi River experiencing very low water conditions. This caused changes in plans on launching and fishing, making the anglers work even harder to obtain victory. Legends Bill Dance and James "Big Cat" Patterson were on hand to participate on this difficult day.
With the river calling the shots, a barge graciously donated for use by Luher Brothers' Barge Company, was the stage for the weigh-in site at the riverfront as the hourly tournament commenced. Radio C106 with Cuz and his staff did a great job broadcasting all the action throughout the day for all the anglers and audience to follow.
Hour after hour big cats were weighed with prizes and cash awarded. A total of over $13,000.00 was presented. The top winners were five in number. Coming in 5th was Chris Stephens with a weight of 36.55 pounds, while fourth went to John Bingham and 39.60 pounds. Julie Kunzeman grabbed 3rd place respectively with a 46.50 blue cat. Privilege of 2nd spot was earned by local favorite Lindsay Sample with a fish weighing 47.10 lbs. The first place and overall winner of the day was Cary Winchester/Brown Water Cats of Jackson, Mo. when he brought in a 55.10 lb Blue to trill the crowd. Congratulations went to all of the winners and placers in the tournament.
It was a wonderful day and ended on a fun note when Southern Fryed played for the crowd after the tournament weigh ins. Ken Freeman, CEO of Ken Freeman Outdoor Promotions, would like to thank Chuck Martin and all his fine staff at the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitor's Bureau for all their help and hospitality in overcoming all the conditions which might have hampered the event. Thanks to the city of Cape and all their cooperation to make the tournament a great success. He also expresses all his gratitude to the sponsors, staff, anglers and friends who join him on the trail. "Another great event for the record books, Thanks to all involved!" stated Ken, "and once again the best is yet to come."
